Federal Agency Leaders to be Featured at NCSE Conference Leaders of federal science and environmental agencies will have key roles at NCSE's 3rd National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment: Education for a Sustainable and Secure Future. The conference will take place January 30-31 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC.
Dr. Rita Colwell, Director of the National Science Foundation, will present the 3rd annual John H. Chafee Memorial Lecture on Science and the Environment. Dr. Colwell will speak about "Obstinate Issues, Sophisticated Solutions: Environmental Science and Education for a New Age."
A roundtable discussion on the role of education in improving the understanding of connections among security, sustainability and the environment will include:
- Lynn Scarlett, Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Policy, Management, and Budget
- Timothy R. E. Keeney, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere
- Charles G. Groat, Director of the U.S. Geological Survey
Ray Suarez from the NewsHour will moderate the discussion. Other discussants will include Dee T. Allsop, CEO of Wirthlin Worldwide; Denis Hayes, President of The Bullitt Foundation; Former Representative James V. Hansen, past Chair of the House Resources Committee (invited); David Orr, Professor and Chair of Environmental Studies at Oberlin College; and Jan Pronk, Special Envoy of the Secretary General of the United Nations on Sustainable Development and former Minister for Environment of the Netherlands.
On the second day of the conference, a panel will respond to recommendations developed by conference participants in 21 topical breakout sessions. Panelists include:
- Paul Gilman, EPA Assistant Administrator for Research and Development
- Judith Ramaley, National Science Foundation Assistant Director of Education and Human Resources
- Eugene Hickok, Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education (invited)
Other panelists will include Bruce Alberts, President of the National Academy of Sciences; Shirley Malcom, Director of Education and Human Resources at the American Association for the Advancement of Science; and Anne Petersen, Senior Vice President for Programs at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
Former Senator Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day, will receive the second NCSE Lifetime Achievement Award.
