NCSE Conference Transcripts, Videos, Draft Recommendations Now Available The 3rd National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment, "Education for a Sustainable and Secure Future," was a tremendous success. More than 800 scientists, educators, and policymakers participated in stimulating discussions on how to improve understanding of the environment, sustainability and human security. The National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) thanks their cosponsors and all who took part in the conference.
Transcripts of key lectures and speeches are now available on the conference website. Jonathan Lash, President of the World Resources Institute, opened the conference with his keynote address, Environment, Rights, and Security. Ray Anderson, Founder and Chairman of Interface Flooring Systems and leader of a revolution for sustainable industrial practices, opened the second day of the conference with a Call for Systemic Change.
NSF Director Rita Colwell delivered the 3rd John H. Chafee Memorial Lecture on Science and the Environment on Obstinate Issues, Sophisticated Solutions: Environmental Science and Education for a New Age. Her talk referenced the new ten-year outlook on the NSF environmental research and education portfolio that was released on January 8, 2003 entitled: Complex Environmental Systems: Synthesis for Earth, Life, and Society in the 21st Century. In addition to a transcript, the webcast of the Chafee Memorial Lecture can be linked to from the conference website.
Video and audio tapes of the lectures and panels are available for purchase. PBS NewsHour host Ray Suarez moderated a panel of government and academic leaders who responded to Jonathan Lash's keynote address. Tom Lovejoy, President of the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment, led education leaders and policymakers in discussion of the recommendations developed at the conference. Media and communications experts discussed how to present sustainability concepts to the public in a panel moderated by Jan Pronk, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General on Sustainable Development. The panel opened with the presentation of the NCSE Lifetime Achievement Award to former Senator Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day.
Draft recommendations developed by conference participants for educational reform for the U.S. and the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2015) can now be read online. The recommendations address topics such as sustainability and security curricula for K-12 and undergraduates, community education, and planetary health. Please register your thoughts about the draft recommendations on the online bulletin boards for each breakout session.
NCSE will continue to maintain and update the conference website as a meeting point for online discussions and a source of links to lecture transcripts, the Chafee Memorial Lecture webcast, draft recommendations, and educational resources related to education for a sustainable and secure future. NCSE will also publish a report of the conference recommendations and plenary texts.
