UN Under-Secretary General Klaus Toepfer to Address NCSE Water Conference Register by December 19 to Save 35 Percent; Final Call for AbstractsUnited Nations Under-Secretary General Klaus Toepfer will deliver a keynote address at the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) conference on Water for a Sustainable and Secure Future. Dr. Toepfer, who also serves as Executive-Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), will travel from Nairobi, Kenya to provide an international perspective on issues of water sustainability. He plans to bring insights from the NCSE conference to UNEP's Global Ministerial Environmental Forum on water, sanitation and human health.
As previously announced, William K. Reilly will deliver the opening address, which will integrate his perspectives as President & CEO of Aqua International Partners, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the World Wildlife Fund, and Former Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Maurice Strong, Secretary-General of the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, will moderate a panel discussion on Sustainable Water Use: Overcoming Barriers to Change. Members of the panel include Bruce Babbitt, who will draw upon his state and national experience as former Governor of Arizona and former Secretary of the Interior, Mohamed El-Ashry, who will draw upon his international perspective as CEO and Chairman Emeritus of the World Bank's Global Environment Facility, and Barbara Sheen Todd, who will bring local government expertise as an elected member of the Board of Commissioners, Pinellas County, Florida, and Past President of the National Association of Counties.
NCSE's 4th National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment: Water for a Sustainable and Secure Future will be held on January 29-30, 2004 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC. This unique, interactive conference will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders—both specialists and non-specialists in water resources—to develop science-based strategies for achieving water sustainability.
Featured speakers include:
- Jared Diamond, author of the national bestseller Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies and recipient of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Medal of Science
- Gen. Gerald Galloway, Vice President of Titan Corp; Chair of the National Water Policy Dialog
- Peter Gleick, President of the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment and Security
- Robert Glennon, Professor of Law and Public Policy, University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law; author of Water Follies
- Robert Hirsch, Associate Director for Water, U.S. Geological Survey
- Jeremy Pelczer, President of American Water; Deputy CEO of Thames Water
- Jane Valentine, President of the American Water Resources Association
All conferees will take part in one of 17 interactive breakout sessions and one of four symposia, where they will discuss specific topics and generate strategies to address some of the diverse and complex issues that surround water sustainability. Active discussion is encouraged in these sessions. The conference will include an exhibition featuring innovative water programs, products and technologies.
A report containing strategies developed at the conference will be widely publicized and presented at briefings to the U.S. Congress, federal, state and local governments, educational institutions, and the general public.
